PUBLIC WORKS ADMINISTRATION

Administering grant programs including the Federal Surface Transportation Program, Transportation Enhancement Activities Program, Los Angeles Regional Park and Open Space District Grant, Community Development Block Grant, Proposition A, Proposition C, and Federal Emergency Management Agency/State Office of Emergency Management funds, and California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) grants.

Monitoring regional issues such as traffic/congestion management, and National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) mandates.

Participation in the Santa Monica Bay/Ballona Creek Watershed Permittee Committee and the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Public Education Committee.

Development, oversight, and monitoring of the Five-year Capital Improvement Program.

Coordination of traffic safety issues including serving as staff advisor to the Traffic Safety Commission.

Participation in the South Bay Steering Committee Technical Advisory Committee.

Providing transit coordination for the City’s participation in Municipal Area Express (MAX) Policy Steering Committee, Palos Verdes Peninsula Transit and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.


PUBLIC BUILDINGS, PARKS & TRAILS & STREET MAINTENANCE

- Caring for the City’s public buildings, parks, trails, and street system includes:

- Administration of public street maintenance and/or improvement through the implementation of a Pavement Management Program.

- Coordination of approximately eight miles of median and parkway maintenance.

- Coordination of an annual Citywide street tree maintenance program for approximately 10,000 trees.

- Monitoring and evaluating storm drain conditions, including coordinating the maintenance of approximately 1,000 storm drain inlets.

- Administration of the ongoing street sweeping program with sweeping activity on approximately 285 curb-miles.

- Coordination of traffic signal and traffic control device maintenance, including painted traffic striping and raised pavement markers.

- Oversight of sidewalk, curb and gutter, as well as weed abatement activities.

- Oversight of the maintenance of thirteen City park facilities representing over 325 acres including maintenance of grounds, irrigation systems, play equipment, walkways, trails, and building interiors and exteriors.

- Oversight of the maintenance of 1,000 acres of open space and nature preserve.

- Issuance and inspection of approximately 120 right of way permits annually to utility companies working in the public right-of-way, as well as approximately 110 permits annually for driveway approaches, street trees, sewer lines, dumpsters, and curb drains, and approximately 60 cell site construction permits.

- Reviewing of tentative tract maps, tract and parcel maps, lot line adjustments, soil and geology reports, and grading plans.

REFUSE DISPOSAL & RECYCLING

Administration of single family, multi family, and commercial franchise agreements through monitoring quarterly reports, ensuring agreement compliance, and assisting with resident concerns.

Administration of AB939 requirements and the Source Reduction and Recycling Element.

Development, implementation, and monitoring of recycling programs.

Providing refuse and recycling public information and education through public forums, press releases, and community workshops.
